LA VIE EN ROSE (France)
The latest film from Oliver Dahan, brings the dramatic story of Edith Piaf, France's greatest songstress, to the big screen. The film opened the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival to great fanfare and went on to enthrall international audiences as it began its theatrical release. The film begins at the height of her career, opening with Piaf's celebrated 1959 New York performace - just four years before her death. Piaf's musical career takes flight when cabaret owner Louis Leplee (Gerard Depardieu, CYRANO DE BERGERAC, LE PLACARD) discovers her on the streets and convinces her to sing - in spite of her fear of performing in front of formal audiences. Cotillard delivers a riveting performance, both lending insight into Piag's misery and dazzling us with the star's incredibly moving stage presence. Aided by expert makeup, this astonishing young actor seamlessly embodies Piaf's transformation from hesitant teenager to international star. With a keen eye for detail and atmosphere, Dahan has beautifully recreated the Paris of the early twentieth century. The film's rich score includes thirty unforgettable songs, including "Non, je ne regrette rien," "Mylord" and, naturally, "La Vie en rose." Audiences will be transported to Piaf's Paris and revel in the voice that captured the world. Official website: www.edithpiafmovie.com |

From reading many of the reviews out there for La Vie En Rose, it sounds that the Movie Review Community overwhelmingly agrees that Marion Cotillard does a fantistic, amazing and show-stealing performance as Edith Piaf. The movie is all about Edith Piaf and Cotillard delivers. There were a couple of draw backs mentioned by several reviewers: the movie is long (144 minutes long), and although beautiful to watch and listen to, the movie is hard to follow as it jumps around chronilogically and skips some key periods in Piaf's life. Overall, a wonderful biopic, filled with the images and sounds of early 20th century Paris. Reviews reviewed for the Reel Review were from these sites: |
