BROTHERS
March 15, 2010 Rated PG
Director: Jim Sheridan Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie
Portman, Tobey Maguire, Mare
Winningham, Sam Shepard Run Time: 105 minutes Country: USA Year: 2009 Language: English

Based on Susanne Bier’s 2004 critically acclaimed Danish
film – which played well on Film Circuit – Brothers tells the
story of how the war in Afghanistan affects and changes
one American family. The film examines the relationship
between two polar-opposite brothers: Sam Cahill, played
by Tobey Maguire (The Good German, Spider-Man), is a solid
family man and career soldier, while his younger brother
Tommy, played by Jake Gyllenhaal (Zodiac, Jarhead), is a
lifelong screw-up just released from prison.
Sam is sent to Afghanistan on a peacekeeping mission,
and when he later disappears during an enemy skirmish
and is presumed dead, Tommy takes on the responsibility of
caring for his brother’s wife, Grace (Natalie Portman, The
Other Boleyn Girl, Closer), and her children.

Tommy and Grace’s once-fractious relationship slowly
begins to blossom as they lean on one another during the
sad and difficult months after Sam’s death. It is apparent
that Tommy is changing, growing in spirit and character
to fill his brother’s absence. But when Sam resurfaces
and returns home after a hellish imprisonment in Afghanistan,
nothing is the same. Disillusioned and dejected, Sam
is haunted by his experience in captivity and resentful of
Tommy and Grace’s newfound bond.
Gifted director Jim Sheridan (In America) subtly and
confidently explores the themes of intense love and lethal
jealousy in this moving film. Maguire delivers a memorable
performance as the tormented, traumatized soldier
affronted by a world he once treasured, while Gyllenhaal
effectively portrays the complexities of a character reborn.
The phenomenal cast is enhanced by veteran performers
Sam Shepard (The Assassination of Jesse James by the
Coward Robert Ford, Don’t Come Knocking) and Mare Winningham
(Georgia, St. Elmo’s Fire).
